NOTATIONSTATION.NET™
GVOX takes note of the music education community
by Lucille Wurtz

GVOX® has announced NotationStation Basic and NotationStation Plus. Heralded by many as a true revolution in music education, www.NotationStation.net gives any music teacher a FREE platform for posting their lessons on the Web, allowing kids to play back the lessons online, compose and print out their own music, and instantly share it with other students, teachers, and parents around the world.

MusicTime Online™
At the heart of NotationStation.net, is the world's first, and only, full-featured online notation program, MusicTime Online. Based on MusicTime Deluxe® and Encore®, the program enables students and teachers to create, play, and edit music notation files within their Web browser. With its fun, easy-to-use, colorful interface, and myriad of instrument sounds, MusicTime Online is fast becoming the hottest new "computer game" on the Net. And teachers love it, because at the core of the "game" lie their music lessons.

Posting Lessons to NotationStation.net
Teachers can create and post lessons to their NotationStation.net site, using MusicTime Online. Or, if they've used notation programs before, they can simply upload any existing notation files that they already have on their hard drive. Three types of files can be uploaded: Standard MIDI files (.mid), MusicTime Deluxe and MusicTime Online files (.mus), or Encore files (.enc). File upload occurs almost instantaneously, when the teacher clicks on the Add Lesson button.

GVOX Virtual Instruments™
MusicTime Online is more than notation. It's a dynamic, online environment in which you'll actually see lessons play back, with correct fingering, on GVOX Virtual Instruments like keyboard, trumpet, recorder, flute and saxophone. Imagine clicking in a few notes with your mouse, or importing a MIDI file, and then instantly seeing and hearing the music played back on the instrument of your choice. Quite a leap from the lone QWERTY keyboard of programs past.

Real-Time Transcription via Microphone Input
GVOX has also integrated its proprietary pitch-to-MIDI technology into the program. This allows students to enter notes simply by playing their instrument into a standard computer microphone.

Step Play
Students on NotationStation.net can get real-time feedback on their performance, via MusicTime Online's Step Play feature. When Step Play is turned on, MusicTime Online will play back a score, one note at a time, moving to the next note only when it has detected that they have played the note correctly.

Submit to Teacher
At the top of the MusicTime Online window, a Submit to Teacher button is provided to enable students to send finished work to their teacher. All submitted files are posted directly to the teacher's NotationStation.net site.

Cross-Platform Use
The NotationStation.net service was designed for both Mac and Windows users; however, at the moment there are some differences in the features available. Netscape 4.6 or higher is required for the Mac version.

It's Completely Free
NotationStation.net is a completely free service. There's no software to buy and nothing to license. All that's needed is a computer with an Internet connection. Any computer lab or school library can instantly become a music lab. Students can access the lessons anytime, anywhere. NotationStation.net is truly building a bridge from the school to the home.

Bonus - Free MusicTime Deluxe
All teachers who register at NotationStation.net also receive a free download of MusicTime Deluxe notation software, allowing them to create and edit lessons while offline as well.

Lesson Library
When teachers create a custom lesson for their NotationStation.net class, they have the option of sharing the lesson with other teachers. These shared lessons are archived in the Lesson Library and can be used by any registered teacher.

Special MENC Presentation
NotationStation has been officially adopted by MENC as the Industry Standard Platform for Online Music Education. NotationStation motivates students and provides teachers with the tools they need to meet both the National Educational Technology Goals set forth by the U.S. Department of Education and MENC's National Standards. GVOX and MENC recently partnered to create a special feature on NotationStation.net entitled A Musical Celebration of the 200th Anniversary of The White House. Students will learn music and become history aficionados when they explore this exciting series of lessons based on the rich musical history of The White House.

McGraw-Hill Premium Content
Soon NotationStation.net will offer expanded curriculum content areas. The first of many partners will be McGraw-Hill Publishing, who will be offering special lessons for use with their Share the Music program.

TI:ME
TI:ME has been closely involved with NotationStation.net from early on in the project's start. TI:ME Director, Tom Rudolph, helped design the online Tutorial and serves as a key consultant. "One of the problems has been that music classes have been second in line to other courses in terms of getting technology and software," said Rudolph, quoted in a recent Philadelphia Inquirer article on NotationStation.net. "Now you are starting to see that change."
