The GIF format supports 256 colors and is appropriate for logos,
cartoons, black and
white images, etc. GIF also supports
transparency (the background can show through)
and animation (see further below).

JPG or JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
The JPG format supports millions of colors and may invoke compression
routines
to make images smaller. JPEG is best for photographs,
especially from a digital camera.
