Technology Institute for Music Educators (TI:ME)
Announces Music Technology Courses

The Technology Institute for Music Educators, a nonprofit organization, has announced the establishment of certification courses in the area of Music Technology. Two Level One courses will be offered beginning in the Summer of 1998. The Level One courses are designed for in-service music educators with little or no background in technology as well teachers who want to develop an awareness of technology and the MENC National Standards. They are designed to familiarize the educator with the various areas of technology and how it can be integrated into the K-12 music curriculum. Course 1A is entitled Basic Skills in Music Technology: Electronic Instruments, MIDI Sequencing and Notation, and course 1B is called Basic Skills in Music Technology: Instructional Software, Communications, and Digital Media.

The following institutions have agreed to offer one or both of the courses: Berklee College of Music, MA; Brigham Young University, UT; Duquesne University, PA; Indiana U. - Purdue U. (IUPUI) Indiana; Kent State, OH; Temple University, PA; University of Akron, OH; University of Southern California, CA; Villanova University, PA; and West Chester University, PA. This is part of a multilevel program being developed for present and future members of the Institute. Level Two certification will be available in the Summer of 1999 and Level Three in the Summer of 2000. These courses focus on technology skills needed in the music classroom. They present a sequential approach to the presentation of technology and link technology and its many applications to the National Standards for Arts Education as endorsed by the Music Educators National Conference.

The Level One courses were designed by members of the TI:ME Advisory Board and headed by Dr. Steven Estrella, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. and Mr. David Mash, Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA.
